"Age as at" is the phrase used to describe the date on which a swimmer's age is calculated for the purposes of competition entry.  The age as at date will vary by competition and will always be explicit in the rules of each competition.

BAGCATS (British Age Group Categories) are a point-based system operated by the ASA.  Their objective is to encourage development across multiple strokes and distances for girls under 14 and boys under 15 and to discourage specialisation at too early a stage in a swimmer’s career.

Card and cardless are two different ways of advising swimmers which events thay have been accepted for in an Open meet.  The rules of the competition will tell you whether a meet is carded or cardless.  There are significant differences between the two processes both before the meet and on arrival on the day.  You need to be aware of what to do; get it wrong and your swimmer may be unable to compete.

The Club Championships are held in January/February (middle distance for distances of 200m and more) and June/July (sprint for distances of 100m and less).  Only members of the Club participate.  There are generally no time, age or ability restrictions; the idea is that everyone should compete if at all possible.

Competitions are a key part of the Club’s activities.  HHSC  is committed to giving as many of our swimmers as possible the opportunity to compete regularly during the year, irrespective of ability.

Competitions can stretch out for some hours, particularly some Opens and Championships.  Making certain that your swimmer is adequately kitted out will make their life just a little more comfortable and your life slightly less stressful.

The Herts County Championships have minimum age and time qualifications.  They take place over two or three weekends in March and are the first formal rung on a ladder that runs through Regionals, Nationals and ultimately ends up at the World Championships and the Olympics.

The Development Meet is organised by Hertfordshire ASA and is held in November each year.  It is designed to give swimmers from around Hertfordshire aged between 9 and 11 an opportunity to prepare for the Hertfordshire County Championships.  The coaches will identify swimmers from Seals, Otters, Junior Squad and Development Squad who they believe should be participating.

Some competions require entry times to have been achieved at a specific level of competition and within a specified period; typically these will be Regional or National competitions.  For all other comeptitions the entry times you use for a swimmer are normally, but not necessarily, the same as personal bests (PBs).  This section describes how you can calculate entry times if they are different to PBs.

Sooner or later your swimmer's name will appear on a team list to represent the club in a gala.  The first gala can be every bit as nerve-racking for parents as it is for the swimmers (frequently more so!).   We've tried to pull together some tips so you know what to expect and so can prepare your swimmer.

Galas are team events where HHSC is normally in competition with other clubs.  Team selection for galas is made by the coaches and posted on the notice board.  If a swimmer is selected for a competition please confirm their availability as soon as possible.

"Heat declared winner" is the term used to describe a seeding method generally used in open competitions and championships whereby swimmers are placed in heats by their entry time but compete for awards in specified age group categories.

Most individual competitions will reward first, second and third places (sometimes more) with the normal coloured medals; sometimes the winner will receive a trophy of some kind.

"No faster than" (NFT) times restrict entries to events by swimmers who have already exceded those times and prevent swimmers who excede those times during a competition from participating in any reward.  The objective is to provide encouragement in specific meets to swimmers who might not otherwise be competitive.

At open competitions swimmers compete as individuals, rather than as part of a club team.  HHSC supports a number of opens during the year for which we will submit a group entry and provide poolside support.

Entering Opens and Championships is as simple as watching the notice board and website for details of forthcoming events - but you have to do it; you shouldn't wait for a coach to suggest it.

This FAQ is intended to help parents of new swimmers understand why the Club supports certain Opens and help them decide which Opens they should enter their swimmer for.  It does not deal with team galas.

Personal bests, or "PB"s are the fastest times a swimmer has swum a particular stroke over a specific distance.  Details of all HHSC PBs can be found on the online times database and in a folder in a rack to the left of the Club noticeboard at Hemel SportSpace.

The Sharks Gala is an annual fun gala in which everyone at HHSC can take part.  It's called "sharks" because participants are divided into six teams, each named after a shark.
